To Create the Greenhouse

• Copy the pattern on green Astrobright cardstock or paper. (I have found that cardstock works best with PreK and kindergarten students due to the sturdiness of the weight.)
• Cut out the middle section and along the roofline to create a greenhouse.
• Have students write their name and the date on their greenhouse. They can decorate it, too.

Plant Some Seeds

You can use any seeds you like, but I like to plant pumpkin seeds with my students. We discuss how pumpkins must be planted in the spring so that they are ready for fall harvest. Also, larger seeds are easier to observe as they grow.

• Pre-soak the pumpkin seeds for 1-4 hours prior to placing them in “the greenhouse”.
• Dampen three cotton balls or a folded paper towel and place them inside of a zipper seal sandwich bag. They should be lightly wet…not soaking wet.
• Place the seeds inside of the bag so that they are touching the damp cotton balls / paper towel. Do not seal the bags! You will need a way to add water if the bags become too dry.
• Tape or staple each students bag to the back of the greenhouse.
• Hang the greenhouses in a window and document the growth of the seeds in a plant journal.
