Looking for heart word (sight word) play dough mats for your kindergarten students that are SOR and OG friendly? This FREE packet is for you! There are two mats per printable page with 92 words in all. A sequence map for the introduction of each word is included. Color and black and white options are included. I’ve included an editable PowerPoint file so you can create customized word cards.

How to Prep These Mats:

These play dough mats work best if they are printed on colored paper to match the color level (pink, yellow, purple, green, orange, and blue).

The mats can either be laminated or placed in clear page protectors. I find laminating them works best for classroom use, while page protectors work great for tutoring or homeschool purposes.

Once laminated, I place the current color we are learning to read in our daily ELA play dough workstation/center. You can present them to students as a full set or add targeted words as the weeks continue. I like setting an entire color level out at once because it serves as differentiation for learners ready to move forward. I do remove previous level mats from the station once we move into a new color level. Once they have been removed, I keep them by my small group area for reading intervention.

These cards can be used in several ways:

General Education Kindergarten Classroom Use:

Each student in my class has their own container of play dough. When it is there turn to visit the play dough station, they grab their container of play dough. I allow students to choose the word mats they wish to work with during workstations.

I know this seems like a rather simple workstation / center…and it is! That’s the beauty of it. It is low maintenance and always engaging for students. Gotta love that!

Reading Intervention Sessions:

These mats can also be used during small group sessions. Use them to practice reading and spelling each word. From there, transition into children building the words with play dough. Have them read the words to each other once they have built a word for additional engagement!
